The Problem with Collapse
And attempting to ignore it
The complexity and speed of planetary collapse are understandable by only a minority of our species. The complexity is too high and the speed is too slow. This combination is, itself, a factor in the complexity of the policrisis.
Many people do not recognize the word ‘policrisis’ that was coined in an effort to help with understanding the composite disasters we are living through. I’m sure a percentage of those people have heard the term but cannot remember it.
Anyone with a background in education has experienced this phenomenon. Some people cannot grasp a concept or concepts and immediately forget what was being discussed. A week later, they may vaguely recognize terms from the previous week’s conversation but have no idea what they mean.
In addition, we now have a pseudo-fascist political movement in the American empire that has gained control of the US government and denies not only climate change but also most of the last 150 years of history. The absurdity of this is stunning but not surprising, as anger and emotion are used to replace fear and confusion.
This is a form of self-induced stupidity.
