I’ve been struggling with the magnitude and timeline of our planetary disaster and the need not to expect things to happen on our preferred schedule. The official explanations push the climate disaster out to the last part of this century with the message, “Don’t worry, be happy.”

Many people have failed, even to get that message, but that is a personal political choice. The official message for the American Empire moved the bad news up to the mid-century. Our public opinion, excluding those programmed to deny all science, visualizes this catastrophe in Hollywood terms as a sudden massive disaster with a heroic recovery.

That is not going to happen. A steadily increasing number of diverse disasters will whittle us down to sustainable numbers from now through the next century or two. Peak dying is on tap for the next few decades.

It doesn’t appear we can select national leaders to manage this humanely. Next year, we could see escalated death tolls moving from disturbing and socially disruptive to devasting if we get a major nuclear war courtesy of our incompetent, bat-shit-crazy leadership. The most often cited other cause of death is a new pandemic on top of the COVID pandemic that is still killing thousands every month.
